Fourth of July is just around the corner! With the weather heating up we decided to make a set of chippy red, white and blue stools. For the complete tutorial visit our YouTube channel. To create this chippy paint finish we have a few simple steps.

We walk you through the full process in our YouTube tutorial, but here’s a quick breakdown of how to get this chippy, timeworn look using milk paint and a few layering techniques.

Steps To Get This Chippy Paint Finish

  1. Paint on a coat of Dark & Decrepit all in one stain and sealer. We mixed in a little black paint to make it darker.
  2. Seal stools with Final Finishes Top Coat in Satin
  3. Mix up milk paint in three colors Sweet Pickins Scarlet (Red), Sweet Pickins Flour Sack (white), and Bespoke Kent ( Blue).
  4. Paint each stool with 2-3 coats of paint
  5. Use heat gun or blow dryer to dry paint to help it crackle and chip.
  6.  Use damp rag to distress paint and dry the water from distressing with a heat gun
  7. Brush on Sweet Pickins Dark Oil Wax Sealer and wipe back

The result? Beautiful, chippy Fourth of July stools that look like they've been around for generations. They're the perfect blend of rustic chippy charm and patriotic spirit.
