How to Paint Charming Cottage-Style Birdhouses
If you love soft, romantic décor with a handmade touch, these cottage-style birdhouses are a beautiful project to try. With layered paint, delicate embellishments, and a few specialty finishes, you can create pieces that feel both vintage and whimsical.
Here’s exactly how we created these sweet birdhouses using Cottage Color paints, moulds, and decorative transfers.
Supplies You’ll Need
- Wooden birdhouses
- Cottage Color Paint in White Linen
- Cottage Color Paint in Veranda
- IOD moulds
- Resin (for moulds)
- Decorative embellishments (bows, birds, etc.)
- Gold finish (“Golden Ticket”)
- IOD Madeline transfer
- Clear wax
- Sandpaper (optional for distressing)
- Paint brushes (various sizes)
Step 1: Prep Your Birdhouses
Start by making sure your birdhouses are clean and free of dust. If the surface is rough, lightly sand it for a smoother finish. No need to overdo it—this style embraces a bit of rustic texture.
Step 2: Apply Your Base Colors
Paint the main body of each birdhouse using Veranda, a soft, muted pink that gives that perfect cottage charm.
Next, use White Linen for the roofs, trim, and base details. This crisp neutral balances the softness of the pink and creates that classic, airy look.
Allow everything to dry completely before moving on.
Step 3: Add Dimension with Moulds & Resin
Using your moulds and resin, create decorative elements like bows and small embellishments.
Once cured, attach them to the birdhouses using adhesive. Position them above the openings or along the front to create a focal point.
Step 4: Highlight with Gold
To elevate the details, apply Golden Ticket to the bows and embellishments.
You can lightly brush it over raised areas for a subtle gilded effect or go a bit heavier for a more dramatic finish. This step adds warmth and a touch of elegance.
Step 5: Apply the Transfer
For the roofs, use the Madeline transfer to introduce delicate floral details.
Carefully apply the transfer according to instructions, smoothing it down to ensure it adheres well. This adds that signature vintage, romantic feel.
Step 6: Seal with Clear Wax
Once everything is fully dry, seal your birdhouses with clear wax.
Apply a thin, even coat and buff gently. This protects your work while giving it a soft, velvety finish.
Optional: Light Distressing
If you love a more aged look, lightly sand edges and raised areas after waxing. This reveals hints of the wood and creates that timeworn cottage aesthetic.
Final Thoughts
These birdhouses are the perfect blend of rustic and refined. The combination of White Linen and Veranda, along with moulded details and soft florals, creates a look that feels timeless and handcrafted.
Display them on a shelf, mantel, or entry table for an instant touch of cottage charm.
If you try this project, experiment with placement and details—each piece can be uniquely yours!
